SDCC: Don’t Lose Your Head in Assassin’s Creed: Unity

It’s clear that Assassin’s Creed: Unity is the biggest, most intense Assassin’s Creed game to date, and at a special San Diego Comic-Con 2014 panel last week, fans got to talk with the creators of the game, and get some cool behind-the-scenes info.

The panel – hosted by actress, comedian, and gamer Aisha Tyler – featured Alex Amancio, creative director for
Assassin’s Creed: Unity, as well as Dan Jeanotte, the voice of French assassin Arno.

Fans were treated to a demo of the game, the first time the public has gotten to see it running in-person. The in-game city of Paris is huge, and filled with crowds of people, large buildings that you can enter, and massive cathedrals. And once you’re in the game, there are no load times; Amancio promised that
Unity will never pull you out of the experience with a loading screen.

We got to see more of how the city comes alive: During the French Revolution, Paris was fractured by rival groups, and those groups appear in the game. These factions battle each other, independent of your activities – which adds to the sense that this is a real, breathing city. The A.I. is smart and chaotic, and when things get serious, it creates a palpable panic and a real sense of terror in the streets of Paris.

But beyond the technical achievements,
Unity is also one of the most personality-filled Assassin’s Creed games, thanks in large part to Arno, who is one of the more lively and personable protagonists we’ve seen in the series.

“Arno’s witty, he’s funny, and he’s direct,” Jeanotte said, moments before Arno brutally took down two city guards, their red blood spilling onto the dirty Paris streets. Talk about being direct!

Wrapping up the panel, gamers got to see a new story trailer, directed by horror icon Rob Zombie and
The Walking Dead co-creator Terry Moore. This probably goes without saying, after dropping those two names, but… it was pretty bloody.

We’re getting more excited for
Assassin’s Creed: Unity every time we see it. It’s truly shaping up to be the most intense game in the series thus far. So, sharpen your hidden blades and pull your hood up: Assassin’s Creed: Unity is coming to Xbox One on October 28.
