Just Who Is the Inquisitor in Dragon Age: Inquisition?

Customizing a character in a role-playing game can sometimes be a process that lasts almost as long as the campaign itself. Hey, we get it – it’s a tough choice. But with the just-released Dragon Age: Inquisition, the choice becomes a lot harder. You’re not just picking hair color; you’re choosing what defines you as a person.

In
Dragon Age: Inquisition, you play as the Inquisitor, AKA the Herald of Andraste. And who you are depends both on the choices you made in previous Dragon Age games (or the really cool interactive backstory map at Dragon Age Keep), as well as your race and class.

So what kinds of options await you in
Dragon Age: Inquisition? Your Inquisitor can be a variety of races and classes, each with their own unique backgrounds and motivations.

Let’s take a look at some of the options for who you might be, and why each character archetype ends up at the Chantry during the game’s explosive and violent beginning.

Your Inquisitor might be a human rogue. She grew up in nobility, a child of the Trevelyan house. Your family mostly consists of priests and templars – though, considering you’re a rogue, your opinions on such matters are… complicated. Still, your family sent you to the Chantry, and you got to see firsthand how poorly templars and mages get along.

Or perhaps you’re a dwarf, which means you’re definitely not going to be a mage (in fact, Dragon Age: Inquisition doesn’t even let you pick that, because it’s straight up non-canonical). That’s fine; a warrior is better suited for you anyway, especially as a cast-off “surface” dwarf, forced to scrape by as a criminal in Carta. You end up as part of a crime family, and your journey brings you to the Chantry on a spy mission that changes your life.

If your inclinations lead you to an elven archer Inquisitor, your life is one of hardship. Elves are still second-class citizens, little more than slaves in many parts of the land. But not you! You’ve rejected that life, growing up in the wilderness and honing your hunting skills. As a nomad, you keep clear of most humans and live a life of solitude, until your clan’s Keeper sends you to the Chantry on a mission that will impact all elves.

The Qunari are a new playable race to Dragon Age: Inquisition, though you’ll find their tales equally as trying. Choosing a mage sees you as an outsider of the Qunari – one who rejects the religious philosophies of your people. You’ve earned your place as a powerful mage among a mercenary group, and the only reason you’re at the Chantry is because you and your group have been your group has been hired as peacekeepers, which does not go well for said group.

These are just some of the backstories, motivations, and personality traits that the Inquisitor can possess. It’s up to you to decide who your Inquisitor is – and more importantly, it’s up to you to decide what your Inquisitor does after the events at the Chantry, when your real story truly begins.
