Hinterland Studio, established in 2012 by veterans of the games industry, is an independent studio headquartered in the heart of the picturesque Northern Vancouver Island wilderness. Collectively, the team has worked on over 40 triple-A games, both on console and PC, and are now focusing on creating our first independent game.
We wanted to create a game that carried a sense of social awareness with morally challenging scenarios that pushed players to answer the question: “How far will you go to survive?” This is how The Long Dark was born, a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience set in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster, where the only antagonist is Mother Nature.
We started a Kickstarter campaign for The Long Dark in 2013, before there was really an established survival genre. We saw this as an early proving ground, to measure interest and see if there was enough enthusiasm to sustain such a project. The Kickstarter campaign was a success and we’ve since sold over 750,000 units!
The Long Dark is currently in Sandbox Mode, which will continue to update on a regular cycle until Story Mode development is completed.
