What Remains of Edith Finch is a collection of playable short stories about a cursed family in Washington State. You play as Edith, who tries to figure out why she is the last one in her family alive upon coming back to the house she grew up in. As you explore the house, you’ll find stories about each family member with its own unique gameplay and each ending with the death of that family member.
It’s a game that touches on a lot of subjects: death, family, stories and what we leave behind, but more than anything it’s a game about the unknown, about exploring something with no idea of what you’re going to find. This makes the game a little hard to describe because the more I tell you about it, the less it’s going to surprise you.
So what else can I say that won’t spoil it? Eventually, everybody dies in it. Just like in real life. It sounds a little sad but it’s not meant to be — the focus is on celebrating a crazy, larger than life family and getting the chance to see the world from some strange new perspectives.
The only other thing I’ll say about What Remains of Edith Finch is this: it’s a game unlike anything you’ve ever played before. If that sounds appealing, I think you’re going to like this game a lot.
What Remains of Edith Finch comes to Xbox One on July 19.
