Now that The Quarry has officially been announced, I’m hugely excited to share what I and the rest of the team at Supermassive Games have been working on. Our next chilling, cinematic horror game takes place at an idyllic summer camp called Hackett’s Quarry. On the last night of camp, our cast of teenage counselors are plunged into an unpredictable night of horror and find themselves unexpectedly hunted by blood-drenched locals and something far more sinister. How this interactive story unfolds is shaped by the decisions you make while playing as each of the counselors, whether that’s in friendly conversation when things are calm or terrifying situations as the night progresses. You’ll be confronted with unimaginable choices as you play, and there is no right or wrong answer—just know that the fate of the camp counselors is in your hands.
We have a total of nine playable characters; teenagers who have spent the whole summer working as counselors and are looking to unwind and party together before heading back to their daily lives. That’s assuming they survive, of course (and there’s no guarantee that any of them will). Fans of teen horror movies will definitely recognize some classic archetypes when you first meet these characters, though there’s more to them than initially meets the eye. I think where The Quarry‘s brand of interactive horror sets itself apart is the myriad ways these characters’ personalities can change as the story—your story—progresses.
Every action you take and decision you make has consequences, many of which are not immediately apparent. It’s not just the choices you make when confronted by danger that dramatically impact the story: even simple, seemingly unimportant interactions between characters are significant. There’s a butterfly effect to what you say and do, and you’re never quite sure when you might find yourself between a rock and a hard place facing a real dilemma. Whatever choices you make or paths you don’t take, the story continues on, resulting in a multitude of possible outcomes when things start to spiral out of control.
To really bring the whole experience to life, we invested a lot of time and effort into ensuring the game’s presentation—and even the character actors and actresses themselves—is of the utmost quality. The cinematic quality of this teen horror story is driven home by the Hollywood talent portraying the counselors and other key characters in The Quarry. It’s been amazing to see actors like David Arquette, Ariel Winter, Brenda Song, Lance Henriksen, and Ted Raimi—to name just a few—really bring our characters to life, not only with their incredible voice work, but also with the physical performances we’re able to put in the game using cutting-edge capture techniques. When combined with traditional filmmaking skills and a director of photography working on each shot, the cast’s performances make for a truly cinematic experience that’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat.
We know that experiencing a thrilling horror story can be even more fun with friends, so we’ve developed The Quarry with this in mind from day one. You can play with your friends in two unique ways: a local pass-the-controller mode in which each player controls one or more specific counselors, and an online mode (across the same console generation only) where choices are decided by vote. If you think some of the choices you have to make are nigh impossible when you’re playing solo, just wait until you’re confronted with them in multiplayer, where the story is shaped by the whole group.
For those of you who would prefer to kick back and watch a binge-worthy horror story unfold, we’ve also included a Movie Mode option. Here you can choose which of multiple versions you want to watch; and there’s even an option to customize the traits of each of the characters, enabling you to press play and see how your movie unfolds! Any character can be the star of the show—or die before daylight comes.
The Quarry will be available for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One consoles on June 10. All of us at Supermassive Games are excited for you to get your hands on it, and we can’t wait to hear how your stories from summer camp play out! As the Hackett’s Quarry summer camp motto goes: What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.
